Does our Software Defined Networking approaches need management? Let’s find out:
There is an issue with management systems and that is it requires complex installation and configuration. SDN was designed to simplify the networking process. There are many systems seen which are being installed but they do nothing other than sitting on the shelf and performing nothing useful.
Another flaw is that NMS does not portray useful information. You may have also observed that a system interface discard counters reported zero, while the QoS system encountered congestion and dropped packets. These dropped packets, affect the application performance.
The configuration management of SDN is different from NMS products and this approach will not work with SDN requiring policy definitions.
Hence the network management cannot be fitted to monitor the modern SDN.

The characteristics required in SDNMS are:
- Autoconfiguration – that requires minimum configuration by the administration.
- Auto-discovery – for automatically discovering the network
- Identification of infrastructure links – The basic links for monitoring.
- Key servers – via traffic analysis (volume, QoS, administrator input)
- Automatic monitoring of key metrics – for monitoring errors, drops, QoS drops, 95th percentile and report in a Top-N format
- Automatic grouping of device and interface – This feature eases the administration and implementation of policies
- Policy-definition mechanism – This mechanism allows the admins to guide about the configuration and detection of problems.
- One-click drill down to the underlying data from any display.
- Virtual network membership – it allows easy identification of devices which are members of a virtual network.
- Health of the SDN control system
It is my desire that more NMS products include good auto discovery and auto configuration options. Due to some reasons, vendors think that configuration is acceptable due to this many of the products become shelfware. To be capable with the SDN, an NMS must consist of automatic configuration and operation.
NMS vendors now think smartly about SDN technology to adapt to the changing world.
According to my opinion, all the vendors will progress and will be the kings of the world of SDN management.
So, the answer to the question I asked in starting is that “Yes! NMS vendors will have to handle the unique functionalities of SDN.”
Seeing the importance of SDN? Register for the course of SDN now before it is too late.
